Hall and Eberle next offseason, Nuge the year after.

Sutter is pretty much the ideal 3rd-line center. He's fast, is good defensively, and is very solid on the PK. And he costs how much a guy playing that role should be making.

As for Pouliot, don't expect him to play for at least a couple years.

I'd take Quick, Lundqvist, Rinne, Howard, Fleury, Miller or Ward over Price, I think.

Add Smith if this turns out to have not been a fluke year caused by playing in an awesome system.

Ideally (not including the Suter pipe-dream), I'd like to sign someone like Carle, then roll with Karlsson/Gonchar/Cowen/Phillips/Carle/Wiercioch and re-sign Carkner as a 7th man.

UFA d-men, in order of 11-12 cap hit (highest to lowest):

Rozsival
Wideman
Kubina
Spacek
Kuba
Sarich
Finger (hah)
Suter
Carle
Salvador
B Allen
Eaton
Corvo
Gill
Martinek
Colaiacovo
S Morrisonn
Aucoin
Salo
Zanon
Foster
Campoli
Souray
Jurcina
Staios
B Clark
Bouillon
R Jones
O'Brien
Lundin
Vandemeer
C White
Huskins
Hannan
Commodore (signing him should be a firing on the spot)
Gilroy
O'Donnell
Eminger
Mottau
Brookbank
Rome
Lepisto
Meech
Carkner
Lebda
Garrison
Sloan
Woywitka
Stoner

and then a few (more) inconsequential no-names

some of those guys are gonna get paid way more than they're worth due to this shortage, aren't they

I would have thought Price would be between 5 and 5.5.

That'd have him with a lower (or equal) cap hit than Rinne, Lundqvist, Luongo, Bryz, Ward, Miller, Backstrom, Fleury and Kipper.

The averaged salary taken for compensation is the first five years of the contract, not the entire term. $40M over 8 years would trigger a 4 first round pick compensation.

I hope some teams do try to woo Schneider with an offer sheet, though. Vancouver will obviously match it, and it wouldn't be anywhere close to the ~$4.7M required to go one step above just being a 1st- and 3rd-rounder as compensation.

Then there's the chance they do somehow get stuck with Luongo and you might actually get a solid young goalie for pretty cheap.

Yeah, the Jets will be fine. If the alternative is a Mason / Gustavsson duo, I'll take Pav at 3.9.

This is a funny idea. Burke would never pull something like this, though.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/ondrej-pavelec-landed-5-19-5-million-deal-213332458--nhl.html

"Let's say Carey Price is at 7 years and $6 million a year. Devan Dubnyk's going to hit $3 million. Tuukka Rask is going to hit $3 million. Cory Schneider is going to hit $3 million. There's a new wave of goalies taking over No. 1 starting jobs in the NHL from the older guard. Between those goalies, statistically and in experience at a No. 1 goalie, Pavs should be slotted under Price," said [Pavelec's agent] Walsh.
